Marking and inspection in the line: date coding, codes, rejection
Marking is no longer just a date on the bottle. Today it is a link between code application, verification, aggregation into cases and pallets, and data transfer to the information system.
Two different levels
The first level is production date coding: date, shift, batch number. Applied by ink-jet printer or laser and used for internal traceability.
The second level is mandatory product identification marking for regulated categories. Here the code is received from an external system, applied, verified by camera, and rejected codes are withdrawn from circulation.
A missed or unreadable code at the second level is not a cosmetic defect but a product that cannot be sold. That is why verification is placed immediately after application.

What inspection controls
- Fill level
- Rejects underfill and overfill before packaging.
- Cap presence and position
- Crooked or missing cap is removed from the conveyor.
- Label
- Presence, position and SKU correctness.
- Code readability
- Camera verification of each applied code.
- Foreign inclusions
- For transparent products — light inspection.
FAQ
Can marking be added to an existing line?
Yes, it is one of the most common upgrades. Space on the conveyor, integration with the accounting system and usually a reconfiguration of packaging section speeds are needed.
What to do with defective codes?
They must be automatically withdrawn from circulation in the system, and physically rejected production must go to a separate tray. Manual accounting does not work here.
Is inspection needed on a small line?
At minimum, level and cap control. This is the cheapest place to catch defects that would otherwise return from the retail chain.
