Milk and dairy filling line: price and composition

A dairy line costs more than a water line of similar capacity because of sanitation, aseptic requirements and cooling. We show which units form the budget and how to choose a configuration for PET, pure-pak, cup or doypack.

In dairy, the price is driven by the target shelf life. ESL and aseptic differ in budget by a multiple, so we start the calculation from the retail shelf, not from capacity.

How we calculate a dairy filling section

  1. Step 1
    Fix the target shelf life

Pasteurized short-shelf, ESL or UHT. The decision determines the clean-room class and cost of the whole line.

  2. Step 2
    Break down the range

Milk, kefir, drinking yogurt, cream. Viscous and fermented products require different pumps, fillers and cleaning modes.

  3. Step 3
    Choose packaging

PET, PE bottle, carton, cup or doypack. We calculate packaging material cost per liter — over a year it often outweighs the machine price difference.

  4. Step 4
    Design sanitation

CIP and SIP circuits, laminar flow zone, personnel barriers, microbiological control. This is a separate and significant budget item for a dairy shop.

  5. Step 5
    Assemble estimate and validation

Equipment, engineering, installation, commissioning, validation protocols for cleaning and filling, training of technologist and operators.

Questions about dairy filling

What is the difference between ESL and aseptic?

ESL extends shelf life to several weeks in the cold chain through clean zones and strict sanitation. Aseptic gives ambient storage but requires a sterile zone and is significantly more expensive.

Can milk and kefir run on one line?

Yes, with compatible viscosities and a well-designed CIP program. Fermented products require a separate fermentation section and more careful product transport.

What is most often underestimated in the budget?

Refrigeration, warehouse and effluent. These items can be comparable in cost to the filling itself, so we calculate them immediately.
