Aseptic filling and PET bottle sterilization

Aseptic technology gives a long shelf life without preservatives and without a heavy heat-stable bottle. The price is a sterile zone, a strict routine and significantly more expensive equipment.

Principle

The product is sterilized in-line at high temperature for a short holding time, then rapidly cooled. In parallel, the bottle and cap are sterilized. The connection of sterile product with sterile packaging happens in an isolated zone under overpressure of sterile air.

This scheme preserves taste and vitamins better than long heat treatment, and allows using a lightweight preform instead of a heat-stable bottle. On large runs the packaging savings noticeably exceed the equipment cost difference.

    Heating to 135-140 °C with a few seconds holding and subsequent rapid cooling.

    Hydrogen peroxide or peracetic acid treatment followed by sterile air blowing.

FAQ

What shelf life does aseptic give?

For juices and beverages usually 9-12 months at ambient temperature without preservatives. The exact figure is confirmed by tests of the specific recipe.

Can hot fill be converted to aseptic?

In practice this means replacing the filling block and adding a sterile zone, effectively a new line. It is cheaper to plan aseptic from the start.

Does aseptic suit dairy products?

Yes, this is the standard technology for UHT milk and dairy-based drinks. The routine is stricter than for acidic juices.
