Food production equipment: how to choose a supplier
The difference between a successful and a failed project usually lies not in the machines themselves, but in who selected them, who is responsible for interfaces and who will come to the site two years after launch.

Three procurement models
Direct purchase from the manufacturer gives the best price for a specific machine, but the customer takes full responsibility for unit compatibility, logistics and commissioning.
Purchase from a dealer adds service and local support, but limits the choice to one manufacturer's line, even if that manufacturer is not the best in a specific unit.
An engineering integrator selects equipment from different manufacturers for the task and is responsible for the whole line result. It is more expensive than direct purchase upfront and noticeably cheaper over several years due to the absence of failed interfaces.
What to look for when choosing
| Criterion | What to check |
|---|---|
| References | Running lines of the same type, preferably with a site visit possible |
| Service | Engineers in your region and declared response time |
| Spare parts | Consumables stock and lead times for critical units |
| Documentation | Complete package in a clear language, including electrical schematics |
| Training | Program for operators and mechanics, not a one-time briefing |
| Warranty | What exactly is covered and what counts as a warranty case |

Warning signals
- Price without specification
- A final sum without a detailed line composition almost always grows at the contract stage.
- No engineering calculation
- Compressor, cooling and water treatment are often not included in the offer and appear later.
- No commissioning plan
- Without a trial schedule the launch date remains uncertain.
- No link to your water and product
- A typical offer without analysis of initial data is a lottery.
- No answer on service
- The question about engineer response time should get a concrete answer in hours and days.
FAQ
European or Asian equipment?
The question is not geography but the specific machine and service. On many units Asian solutions give the required quality at half the price, while on precision units the difference in service life justifies the European option. An optimal mixed specification is best.
Is it worth buying used equipment?
Sometimes yes, but only after a technical audit checking wear of units, availability of documentation and spare parts availability. Without an audit, savings often turn into long downtime.
How to verify the stated capacity?
Trial conditions are fixed in the contract: product, container format, test duration and acceptable reject rate. Without this, the catalog figure guarantees nothing.
