Juice Filling Line: Hot Filling vs. Aseptic Filling
For juice, the choice comes down to two technologies: hot filling into heat-resistant containers and aseptic filling into cold, sterile bottles. This choice determines the line cost, product shelf life, and packaging cost for every production run.

Why Juice Cannot Be Filled Like Water
Juice is a nutrient-rich medium. Any residual unpasteurized microorganisms continue to develop inside a sealed bottle: the product becomes cloudy, pressure increases, and the packaging deforms. A juice line therefore always includes heat treatment and protection against secondary contamination.
The second factor is pulp and fiber. The filling valve, pump, and piping for juice with pulp differ from those used for smooth, free-flow filling: they require unobstructed flow passages without dead zones and a feed system that does not damage the particles.
The third factor is acidity and temperature. Acidic juices and nectars are easier to stabilize than neutral dairy- or plant-based beverages, which require more stringent processing conditions.

Hot Filling Line Configuration

Blend Preparation
Concentrate reconstitution, sugar syrup and acid dosing, and homogenization.

Deaeration
Removal of dissolved oxygen. Without it, vitamins degrade and the product color darkens.

Pasteurization
Tubular or plate heat exchanger with a holding section. A tubular system is used for juice with pulp.

Filling Triblock
Rinsing, filling at 85-92 °C, and capping in a single enclosed housing.

Cooling Tunnel
Staged bottle cooling after inversion. Rapid cooling deforms the container.

Labeling and Packaging
Labels are applied only to dry bottles, followed by multipack packaging and palletizing.

- Recipe
- Not-from-concentrate juice, reconstituted juice, nectar, or fruit drink. This changes the preparation section.
- Pulp Content
- Particle size and concentration determine the valve and pump type.
- Container Format
- PET, glass, doypack, or carton. Each format requires a different layout.
- Product Range
- The number of SKUs and changeover frequency affect the automation selection and the required set of format parts.
FAQ
Can juice and water be filled on the same line?
Yes, if the line is initially designed as a combination system with a bypass around the pasteurizer and separate CIP circuits. Retrofitting a water line for juice later is more expensive than incorporating this capability during the design stage.
Is a deaerator necessary on a small line?
It is sometimes omitted for production runs of up to several thousand bottles per shift, but this reduces shelf life and color stability. We recommend including deaeration from the outset for any not-from-concentrate juice.
Is a standard PET bottle suitable for hot filling?
No. A heat-resistant preform and a bottle with vacuum panels are required; otherwise, the container will collapse during cooling. This requires a separate mold design.
