Aluminum Can Filling Line: What to Know Before Buying

Cans provide superior protection against light and oxygen and offer logistics advantages, but they allow less room for error: an incorrect seamer seam can turn an entire batch into rejects that are not discovered until the product reaches the warehouse.

Why Manufacturers Choose Cans

An aluminum can is completely opaque, preventing product degradation from light. It is lighter than glass, stacks more efficiently on a pallet, and cools faster—important advantages for beer, low-alcohol cocktails, and energy drinks.

At the same time, cans require advance artwork planning: the design is printed during can manufacturing, so minimum production runs are higher than for labeled PET containers. Shrink sleeves or pressure-sensitive labels on blank white cans are used for small runs.

Sequence of Operations

  1. 1

    Can Depalletizing

Layer-by-layer pallet unloading and feeding onto the conveyor.

  2. 2

    Rinsing and Blow-Off

The cans are inverted and cleaned with ionized air or water.

  3. 3

    Filling

Isobaric filling with carbon dioxide purging for carbonated beverages.

  4. 4

    Lid Feeding and Seaming

The seamer forms a double seam. This is the critical quality-control unit.

  5. 5

    Inspection

Fill-level and seal-integrity inspection, followed by rejection of nonconforming cans.

  6. 6

    Pasteurization and Packaging

Tunnel pasteurization when required, followed by multipack packaging and palletizing.

Double-Seam Inspection

Seam parameters are checked during every shift. This is the only way to detect loss of seal integrity in time.

FAQ

Can a single line handle both cans and bottles?

Not as a complete solution: the fillers and capping systems are fundamentally different. It is more practical to use two lines or outsource canned production until the volume justifies dedicated equipment.

What is the minimum production run for printed cans?

It is generally tens of thousands of cans per design. For smaller runs, white cans with sleeves or pressure-sensitive labels are used.

Is a pasteurizer required?

Yes, for beer and sugar-containing beverages without sterile filtration. For energy drinks with preservatives and a low pH, hot filling or cold aseptic filling is often sufficient.
